But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14)
As we emerge from the recent experience of a pandemic lockdown, this first post-lockdown bulletin will focus on having the right personal attitude towards Higher Ground and success in life’s endeavours. Four attributes are in view from our bible reference above namely to forget the things that are behind; reaching forth to the things that lie ahead; pressing on with courage and determination; and being mindful of the prize and reward of success.
Forgetting the things that are behind: The Lord has already told us in Isaiah 43:18-19 to put behind the things that are bygones and to look forward to the new things that lie ahead. This is not an instruction for the beginning of the year only; it is a requirement for a blessed life on daily basis. The implication is to keep short accounts of offences with our fellow men and life’s situations, such that we can quickly forgive those who have offended us, as well as receiving grace to get over unpleasant daily encounters without them keeping us under a lockdown mode. Ephesians 4:26 specifically enjoins us not to let the sun go down on our anger, pointing to deliberately letting go of offences without much delay.
This also points to the need to keep short accounts with God, such that we are quick to repent and amend our ways when we get it wrong; and having done this, we should also be quick to forgive ourselves, so we do not fall into the trap of prolonged guilt and despondency. All of the points mentioned herein can limit our journey to progress if not properly handled. There is a clear indication that if we do not properly settle the past (yesterday), it can limit our future progress (tomorrow). Let us therefore look forward in hope to a bright future, the recent difficult past notwithstanding.
May the Lord help us have the right attitudes to life, so we can have the proper approaches necessary to travel along the path leading to Higher Ground.
Every blessing
